Project R1-4
Community-Assisted Rideshare Service (CAReS) for Rural Communities
Presenters: Abhay Lidbe (UA), Drew Pearl (UA), Daniela Susnara (UA), Jun Liu (UA), Steven Jones (ATI)
Abstract: The project aims to establish local rideshare services in underserved rural areas of Alabama, operated by local community members, to address transportation challenges and bridge the gap in access to essential services and opportunities. The long-term goal is to create community-led ridesharing services, operated by volunteers and championed by community leaders. The project evaluates the feasibility through UTC-REE seed grants, engaging community leaders, identifying volunteers, assessing technological and revenue needs, and identifying liability concerns related to volunteer driving. Active community participation is crucial for the success of this project. The proposed model has the potential to be replicated in other regions.
