Abstract: To enhance the accessibility of healthcare services in rural areas, particularly within Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs), there is a pressing need to investigate alternative modes of transportation to complement or replace current transportation options. Emerging technology and services, such as telemedicine, autonomous vehicle (AV) services, shared mobility, mobile clinics, etc. has potential to improve current transportation infrastructure, thereby facilitating improved accessibility to healthcare for residents in rural areas. Consequently, it is imperative to identify current service gaps, as well as opportunities and obstacles associated with integrating emerging technologies into rural regions. Researchers have gathered county-level data in four states on HPSAs, healthcare access, healthcare outcomes, population demographics, and transportation infrastructure in an effort to understand these relationships. The project team will then work toward developing a healthcare infrastructure needs model that quantifies costs of various implementations as well as the health outcome improvements. Our analysis is still pending preliminary data collection efforts.
