Equity in Transportation Research: From Infancy to Implementation
Presenters: Laquanda Leaven Johnson, Ph.D. (NCAT), Oghenetejiri Ebakivie (NCAT)
Abstract: The purpose of this project is to develop an Equity Continuous Improvement Framework (E-CIF) for transportation research activities. This research endeavor explores what is meant by equity and how it can be implemented in transportation research and not overlooked. This includes addressing how equity is related to who performs research and who has access to resources to conduct research tasks. In addition, understanding the current state of equity inclusion in the different transportation research areas is imperative for this study. This research takes a close look at the transportation research culture and processes at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville (UTK) and North Carolina A&T State University (NCAT), through performing a comparative analysis to better understand how equity can be considered from the beginning to the completion of a research study. A major component to this study is meeting with stakeholders (researchers, funding agencies, etc.) to gain their perspective on existing equity inclusion possibilities. As a result, the researchers map out the research process and equity measures are identified for each of the different research activities.
