Understanding Transport and Land Use Accessibility Disadvantage in Rural and Small Urban Contexts: A Multi-Perspective Analysis
Presenters: Hao Zhen (UGA), Jidong J. Yang (UGA), and Stephan Durham (UGA)
Abstract: Transportation serves as a linchpin in meeting the fundamental needs of individuals and communities, facilitating access to vital services and opportunities. The broader concept of accessibility encompasses four critical components: transport, land use, time, and individual factors, emphasizing the implications of their convergence. This study focuses on Transport and Land Use Accessibility Disadvantage (TLAD) within rural and small urban contexts, aiming to develop a holistic approach to identify, assess, and quantify TLAD while considering data availability and the unique characteristics of these communities. Conducted at the county level, the analysis employs a spatial multi-perspective approach, addressing three key aspects of TLAD: macro-accessibility, mobility, and travel behavior. Macro-accessibility is evaluated based on access to employment, education, healthcare, and groceries. Mobility assessment take into account the specific needs of each county, while a statistical model explores the interplay between macro-level travel behavior, exemplified by Daily Vehicle Miles Traveled (DVMT), and socio-economic, demographic, and TLAD-specific variables.
