Abstract: The recent integration of CAVs into rural areas has become an emerging research area. These advancements offer the potential to transform rural mobility by addressing unique challenges such as limited infrastructure and geographical barriers, highlighting critical barriers such as limited bandwidth, high network latency, and insufficient infrastructure for advanced networking technologies. This paper provides an in-depth analysis of rural transportation challenges, discusses the evolution of various vehicular communication technologies, and examines the critical network performance requirements necessary to successfully deploy CAV infrastructure in rural settings. So, insights into the integration of intelligent transportation systems using V2X communications are discussed, and novel network architectures and protocols are investigated to overcome the limitations of existing systems. Also, this paper emphasizes the importance of enhancing network coverage, developing adaptable technologies, and ensuring robust security measures to effectively incorporate CAVs into rural transportation systems, leading to improved safety, efficiency, and overall quality of life for rural residents.
