Abstract: The compositional and spatiotemporal characteristics of traffic and transportation infrastructure in rural areas are different from those in urban areas. The data and communication infrastructure must be attuned to these unique attributes. This presentation elaborates on the identification of infrastructure needs in rural areas to support the integration of connected and autonomous vehicles, enhancing mobility for individuals and freight. It covers the architectural design of data and communication systems to address rural peculiarities such as sparse vehicle distribution, inadequate lighting, limited roadside safety features, V2I communication, highway-rail intersection control, and communication signal coverage. The presentation then extends to the deployment of this architecture, employing technologies like renewable energy-powered IoT sensor networks, 5G data relays, CPS, edge computing, mixed reality, and AI-driven traffic and infrastructure management towards rural applications. This holistic approach targets at a strategic and technology-driven framework to enhance and modernize rural transportation infrastructure, aligning it with present and future mobility demands.
