ABSTRACT

In this talk, Dr. Radwan provides an overview of the transformative role of technology in fostering a transportation system that prioritizes both equity and safety, with a focus on disadvantaged communities, vulnerable road users, and rural communities. Drawing on over three decades of experience in transportation safety research, including roles within the US DOT, academic research centers, and industry consultancies, Dr. Radwan aims to shed light on the critical intersection of technology, policy, and research. This presentation also reviews the USDOT's strategic vision for creating an inclusive transportation future, highlighting key programs and initiatives that support the development and deployment of emerging technologies to address safety and equity issues.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER 

Dr. Randa Radwan currently serves as Senior Advisor for Safety & Mobility at the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Research and Technology (OST-R) at US DOT, where she is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to OST-R’s commitment to transform the nation’s transportation system and build a better transportation future for all. Dr. Radwan has over thirty years of experience performing and directing transportation safety research at DOT, transportation research centers in academia, and consultancies with industry. She recently served as principal investigator on an occupant demographics study for the Alliance for Automotive Innovation, providing insight into gender equity in real-world crash protection. Dr. Radwan served three years as Director of the UNC Highway Safety Research Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Dr. Radwan has a PhD in transportation safety engineering from George Washington University and a master’s and BS in electrical engineering from Rice University. She loves living in a walkable community in Washington, D.C. (and smiles when she encounters bike lanes). Randa is a proud mom of two young men who also live on the East Coast, but her two newly adopted kittens steal the show.
